Fazenda Floresta, Buri, Brasil
Fazenda Floresta was founded in 1976 with an ambitious vision: to become one of the few fully organic farms in Brazil at a time when organic agriculture was still in its infancy. Over the decades, the farm went through several development phases, experimenting with different crops and livestock systems while searching for a sustainable and economically resilient model.
During its early years, the property tested a broad variety of agricultural activities—from mixed cropping systems to rotational cattle farming—always guided by principles of environmental stewardship and low-impact land use. This exploratory phase laid the foundation for a deep understanding of the land’s natural potential and limitations.
In the early 2000s, Fazenda Floresta initiated a strategic shift toward commercial forestry, recognizing both the region’s suitability for high-quality timber production and the long-term sustainability of managed forests. It began planting Pinus Elliottii, establishing the basis for what would become the farm’s core activity.
Today, the farm operates with notable efficiency and specialization in gum-resin extraction, which has evolved into its principal line of business. Alongside forestry, Fazenda Floresta continues to maintain medium-scale agricultural production, successfully cultivating soy and maize. A small, carefully managed cattle herd remains part of the operation, preserving the farm’s original multi-activity character while ensuring diversified land use.
Nearly five decades after its founding, Fazenda Floresta stands as a mature, resilient, and diversified rural enterprise—its successful forestry management providing the scale, expertise, and financial strength to expand and invest in new opportunities in Mozambique. Today, it continues to grow through a balanced combination of forestry, agriculture, and sustainable land management, both in Brazil and abroad.
